Escaping the Night Watch is one of my most personal pieces because
it’s about my struggle to become a better painter. When I started this
painting, oil paint was still relatively new to me. While looking at
the works of other oil painters I could only focus on the things they
did so much better than me. Could my work ever even come close to
theirs? So I became very frustrated with my own progress. Painting
should come from the heart and it should be a pleasant experience,
right? But for painters there is no greatness without frustration.
Today I accept and embrace frustration as an intrinsic part of my
painting process, though I will always remain that young boy escaping
the Night Watch.
